CLYDE FIFE HOW THE COUNTRY WORKED

Zita Denholm

Clyde Fife (1897-1971) went from Goulburn to Wagga Wagga , New South Wales , as a young man to work for a chaff cutting contractor. He and his brother Jim became independent operators of two chaff cutting plants, widely known in the state for their expertise and reliability. Then they became Master Bakers, mill owners and produce merchants and developed their own modern premises.

At the time of his death Clyde Fife was the longest-serving alderman on the Wagga Wagga City Council and an important figure in the local branch of the Liberal Party.

The book is enhanced by the photographs of the Fife collection. They are an unrivalled record of an industry which was essential to the life of the country for much of the twentieth century. It continues to fuel one of our most important recreational industries – racing.

Zita Denholm , the author, has a long-standing interest in studying the lives of those whose careers might be considered ‘typical' or their industries and their times. She is also the author of the very successful T.Y.S.O.N. (see this site) which looks at the life and times of an nineteenth century pastoral millionaire.
